costs involved
The cost of caring for a horse is approximately $250 per month (not including unexpected emergency vet fees). MHR &S currently has 27 horses in our care - $6,750 to properly feed, water, and house these magnificent animals. Additionally, the facility is in constant maintenance mode.
The equine residents of MHR&S are "kept" in herds - based upon their age, physical and mental abilities, and general overall health. Just like people, horses can be temperamental and it is important to house the herds with those with similar capabilities, Each herd is surrounded by corral panels and we have constructed several loafing sheds within each herd to serve as housing when the horse desires shelter. Horses can be rough on these elements! The replacement cost for corral panels is roughly $150.00 per 12' panel. We recently rebuilt several loafing sheds during the Fall of 2020, at a cost of roughly $1,000. MHR&S completes the manual labor required for all repairs, keeping the costs as low as possible.
Idaho is known for its cold, wintery winters. Each herd is equipped with water barrels and heaters, ensuring a never ending supply of fresh water (we are constantly cleaning and changing out the water). These heaters are replaced annually.
Hay prices fluctuate from year to year, and continue to rise. We generally are not given the yearly price rate of hay until the first cutting, which makes budgeting for this need challenging.
This is just a basic summary of what it takes to care for the horses at MHR&S.
