MHR&S was founded by Stephanie Pierce in 2000, with her husband of 22 years, Robert Pierce. Stephanie was raised with horses her entire life. Robert is a Farrier and provides all hoof care for the horses in sanctuary. The love of horses courses through their veins like the sound of thundering hoof beats. Before the inception of MHR&S, they observed the definite need for horses that were no longer wanted, and for those that were being abused. They worked diligently with local Animal Control and Law Enforcement agencies to give individuals an alternative location for their horses as opposed to sending them to sales barns where they were sold by the pound for slaughter.
It has been an amazing journey and there has never ever been a day that Stephanie and Rob have regretted being to be able to help and be the voices for those that cannot speak for themselves.
MHR&S opened its gates on February 15, 2001 - by July 2001, 17 horses with varying degrees of abuse were in their care. As of January 2021, 459 horses have been rescued.

To date, the worst case of abuse was HalfMoon, who came to MHR&S at 5 years old. A Mustang born in captivity, he suffered daily beatings and was deprived of food and water. HalfMoon still resides at MHR&S and at 25 years old, he has become an absolute pocket pony who adores being touched and brushed. It took six years of positive daily interaction to get him where he is today.
The mission of MHR&S Sanctuary is to provide horses of age and with disabilities a place to live out the remainder of their lives receiving the care they so justly deserve.
Our mission includes rescuing mares in foal, giving them a safe environment to have their babies. The mares are then able to live out their lives in the sanctuary.
While foals are still at the mares sides, we provide them with the imprinting with humans which is necessary for their futures. It is also during this time we seek out the correct home for foals upon weaning. A binding contract is established for the protection of the horse.
The horses living in sanctuary receive all care from feed to veterinary care. They are given positive daily interaction. Some in their lives were never provided with this prior to MHR&S text
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve conditions. Your generous donation will fund our mission.
